Course Map

The GOTR MoCo 5K will start and finish in the parking lot of Westfield Montgomery near Sears. The course will be closed to traffic and will take participants behind the mall through the business park. For your convenience, portable toilets will be located at the start/finish area, and on-course near the water station. On-course water will be available, and medical aid will be provided at the finish. Click here for a map of the Start/Finish Line Area.

As you will see on the Start/Finish Area map, there are 3 zones: purple, pink, and green. Each zone has three numbers within it. Each team is assigned to a color and number zone where they can meet up prior the 5K. The zone you are in will also correspond to the wave in which you will start the 5K. One way to know your zone is the color of the bib you will wear to the 5K. The label on your bib will have your team's color and number zone written out. Click here for a list of the wave/zone assignments for each school.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is the Girls on the Run 5k?

The 5K is a 3.1 mile, out-and-back course.

What time do I need to arrive?

Plan to arrive at Westfield Montgomery Mall by 8AM to participate in the pre-5K festivities, which include music, dancing and hair decorating. The 5K starts promptly at 9AM. The parking garage at the mall can accommodate thousands of cars and is easily accessible from many streets surrounding the mall. Arriving early ensures that you have time to meet your GOTR team before the 5K for last minute instructions and words of encouragement.

What’s the best way to get to Westfield Montgomery Mall from my house?

The address is: 7101 Democracy Blvd., Bethesda, MD 20817 Driving Directions From Gaithersburg & Points North: Take I-270 South toward Washington, at the I-270 split, bear right toward Virginia. Take Exit #1, bear right on to Democracy Boulevard. Follow signs to parking. From Silver Spring & Points East: Take 495 West toward Northern Virginia. Take Exit #36, Old Georgetown Road. Bear right off the exit ramp. Proceed to the third light and turn left on Democracy Boulevard. Follow signs to parking. Parking: Complimentary parking is available at Westfields Montgomery Mall and parking professionals will guide you to a parking spot safely as you enter from Democracy Blvd. or Westlake Terrace.

With so many people arriving to the 5K site there will be traffic! Also, the streets that make up the 5K course will be closed to traffic at 8AM so plan accordingly. Public Transportation: Metro and BUS: Take the Red Line to the Medical Center station and board J2 bus. Please visit the WMATA website for bus schedules.

I forgot to pre-register for the 5k. Can I register on-site?

No, there is no on-site registration. You may register Saturday at Westfield Montgomery Mall.

I can’t find my child/parent. What do I do?

Go to the Family Reunion area. This is the official Lost Child Center. Volunteers there will radio the child’s information to course marshals and start/finish captains and alert them about the missing child. Missing children will also be escorted to the Family Reunion area.

My girl’s running buddy can’t come. What should I do?

You should speak with your girl’s coach about options to run with other adult buddy runners. Perhaps there’s a parent on your team who can run with two girls, or perhaps your coach can run with your girl. Your coach should be able to help you find a solution.

Is the 5k course safe?

The course is as safe as any outdoor event can be. We hire police officers to close the roads and we are fortunate that our GOTR coaches are CPR and First Aid Certified, which makes them capable first-responders. We also have medical professionals and an ambulance on the premises during the entire event. Adult course marshals are posted along the 5K route and “Safety Runners” wearing pink vests run the 5K. If any participant needs assistance during the event, these volunteers can help.

Is First Aid available?

A first aid tent is located within the start/finish area. In addition, there will be an EMT Unit present as well.

I am a GOTR participant running the 5k. Where do I go and where do I find my coach?

After parking, walk toward the parking area behind Sears. You will meet your team at the large color flags corresponding to the color and number on the label on your bib number. There will also be large signs placed throughout the meeting area with a list of schools and their color zones.

Here is a map of the activities for the day:

Start and Finish Line Map

What else does the color and number on my bib mean?

We will line up teams/schools for the start of the 5K according to the color and number on your 5K number, or bib. Your school team will proceed to the starting area when your color and number has been called. We do this to control congestion on the course.

What do I need to bring with me to the 5K?

Bring your great attitude and sunny smile! 5K day is hectic and requires a lot of patience and a sense of humor. Don’t forget your bib number and safety pins if you’ve received them before the 5K There is no storage at the 5K so plan to carry any valuable items with you.

I’m late and my team has already moved to the Starting Line, what do I do?

Go to the Starting Line as soon as possible and don’t worry about joining your team members-you can meet up with them after the 5K!

Where is the Starting Line?

The starting line is along Ring Road on the property of Westfield Montgomery Mall. You will see a giant inflatable arch denoting the start and finish line. Please see the course map above for further details.

Where do I go after my girl starts the race?

You can watch the 5K from alongside the course. Course marshals will be along the course to ensure the runners’ safety and also direct spectators. You can also park at Walter Johnson High School, accessed from Rock Spring Road, and watch the 5K pass by at approx. mile 1.5.

How do I participate safely and courteously in a 5k?

At times there will be faster runners passing slower runners and walkers along the course. Good manners dictate that slower runners and walkers give way to faster runners by staying to the right on the road. If you are overtaking a slower runner please give the warning “passing on your left” and wait for the slower runners to move over. Minding your manners on the course will help everyone have a fun and safe experience.

Where is the On-Course Water Station?

There is one water stop just before the 1.5 mile mark, near Walter Johnson High School. Runners are encouraged to quickly pick up a cup of water and keep moving. This is the one time when you’re encouraged to litter – in order to keep the 5K moving, just throw your cup off to the side when you’re done. Our water stop volunteers will pick up all of the cups. There is also water at the finish line.

Where do I meet my runner after he/she crosses the finish line?

You may meet your 5K participant outside the barricaded finishing area, or you can arrange to meet him/her at their school meeting sign. We expect over 5,000 people to run the 5K so we encourage you to make a post-5K meet-up plan with your runner before the start of the event. We will also have a Family Reunion area near the stage.
